Grow your own Mistletoe

Mistletoe is an old Holiday tradition followed by millions of people around the world. Sure, we all know that couples are supposed to kiss when standing under it, then pluck a berry from it, and of course, when the berries are all gone, the kissing stops, but why is that we do this? How did this tradition come about? On this blog, I will tell you how the mistletoe tradition began, and most importantly how you can grow your own Mistletoe!

The Mistletoe tradition began in the 18th Century. Since then, people from all over the world have used the Mistletoe as a tradition and decoration for their homes during the Holiday Season, but there are many theories as to how and why this tradition began. The most popular theory is that the mistletoe goes back to ancient Norse Mythology where a goddess named Frigg had a son named Baldr. It is said that when he was born, Frigg made all plants unable to harm her son, but she overlooked the Mistletoe. Unfortunately, a god known for his mischief, Loki, found this out, and tricked another god into killing Baldr with a spear made of mistletoe. Eventually, the gods were able to bring Baldr back to life, and his mother Frigg declared that the mistletoe would bring love instead of death into the world. Because of this, people kissed under the mistletoe in order to obey the goddess and remember the resurrection of Baldr.

The tradition of the Mistletoe during the Holiday Season is used all around the world, but the meaning of the Mistletoe vary. Many people believe that the Mistletoe brings couples good luck when they kiss under it. That is, good luck that leads to marriage, or if the couple is already married the mistletoe is said to help with fertility ensure a happy life. Other people believe that when it comes to farming, the mistletoe is a sign that there will be a good harvest in the following season.
